Campaigns and Hubs The LGBTQ+ voting hub Register to vote Registering to vote takes as little as five minutes. You need to register before voting in elections. To register to vote in England, Scotland or Wales, you must be aged 16 or over. You must also be one of the following: a British citizen an Irish or EU citizen living in the UK a Commonwealth citizen who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission a qualifying EU citizen living in the UK You must also be resident (live in) England, Scotland or Wales. If you’re a British citizen living abroad, then there you may be able to vote in UK election. For more information about voting when you live abroad, visit the Electoral Commmission’s site. You can register using the government’s online portal You’ll be asked for your: Name Address (and previous address if you’ve moved in the past 12 months National Insurance number If your name, address or nationality changes, you’ll need to register again If you don’t have your National Insurance number, then you can still apply through the online voter registration portal, but you must leave your contact details. Your individual council electoral services team will then get in contact to verify your identity. You may be asked for a birth certificate, utility bills, or bank statements. Registering to vote if you’re homeless Many LGBTQ+ people are homeless or face unstable living conditions. If you don’t have a fixed address, you can still register to vote. Instead, use the address of somewhere you spend a “substantial amount” of your time. This could be a homeless shelter, or a community centre.
