Suicide Prevention Directory

A list of organisations, support groups, helplines and services for suicide prevention. If you see an organisation that is not on this list, please contact us at [email protected].


If you are in a crisis

If you're experiencing an emergency and feel like your life or safety is in danger, please call 999 and ask for the police or ambulance service. 

If you feel like you might attempt suicide, or may have seriously harmed yourself, you need urgent medical help, please: 

  • Call 999 for an ambulance 
  • Go straight to A&E, if you can 
  • Call your local crisis team - if you don't already have their number, you can find an urgent mental health helpline on the NHS website
  • You can also call Samaritans on 116 123 to speak to someone, 24/7, 365 days a year

If you don't want to talk to someone over the phone, these text lines are open 24 hours a day, every day. 

  • Shout Crisis Text Line – for everyone - Text "SHOUT" to 85258 
  • YoungMinds Crisis Messenger – for people under 19 - Text "YM" to 85258.
Stay Alive app Stay Alive can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store for smartphones and tablets. The web version functions like a website and can be accessed from smartphones, tablets and desktop or laptop computers. 

The app is totally free to download and access, and it always will be. No areas are locked or require purchase and Stay Alive contains no advertising.

Samaritans

Aims to provide emotional telephone support to anyone in emotional distress, struggling to cope or at risk of suicide through the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

SANE

Aims to raise awareness, fight to improve services, provide emotional support, and host research. SANEline is a national out-of-hours mental health helpline offering specialist emotional support, guidance, and information to anyone affected by mental illness, including family, friends, and carers. They are normally open every day of the year from 4pm to 10pm.

Switchboard

A safe space for anyone to discuss anything, including sexuality, gender identity, sexual health, and emotional wellbeing. They offer telephone, online chat, and email support.

The Silver Line

A free, confidential telephone service for older people. They provide friendship, conversation, and support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Gives anyone aged 55 or over the opportunity to exchange a friendly word, access support, or enjoy a long enriching conversation.

Fights for mental health, for support, for respect, for you. They change minds across England and Wales by making mental health an everyday priority. They offer help whenever it might be needed by providing information, advice, and local services.

Childline

There to help anyone under 19 in the UK with any issue they are going through. They encourage people to talk about anything whether it's something big or small. They have trained counsellors there to support you.

Cruse Bereavement Support

Offers support through its website, national helpline, group, Zoom, telephone, or one-to-one in-person support. They want to make sure everyone grieving gets the help they need in a way that works for them.

Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SOBS)

Offers peer-led support to adults impacted by suicide loss. They help individuals support each other at the time of their loss and in the months and years that follow.
